The liver is a vital organ that performs many different tasks.  It produces bile, a substance to help break down fats and is the body’s main “detoxifier.” The liver had many powerful enzymes that breakdown toxins or chemicals in the food we eat including alcohol, medicine and herbal supplements. It is key in the processing of glucose, cholesterol and iron, B12 and copper. It is also the only organ in the body that is capable of regenerating itself,  if parts are removed (eg, via surgery) or become diseased. However, even a resilient organ such as the liver cannot withstand long-term pressures such as consuming too much alcohol or other substances that may be toxic/harmful. This can lead to permanent damage in the form of cirrhosis or liver cancer. Dr Samuel is involved in the care of patients with the below:

  • Fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
  • Alcoholic Liver Disease
  • Haemochromatosis
  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Liver Cancer)

  • Acute viral hepatitis A-E
